Heart Walk 2011

The Pirates invite fans, friends and family members to join our team as a member of the Salty Pete Pacers

for the Southern Maine Heart Walk. This family-oriented event blends the benefits of physical activity, community involvement, and personal giving to help raise funds for research and education.

Second year defenseman T.J. Brennan is serving as the Pirates player representative for the Southern Maine Heart Walk. Brennan's grandmother passed away after suffering a heart attack when she was only 49 years old.

Heart disease is killing people from Maine in increasingly frightening numbers. Last year alone, over 4,000 Mainers died from heart disease. That's one in every 330 residents of our state. And more than 25,000 Mainers are living with heart disease. That's one in every 50. Odds are a few of them are people you know. A friend, a family member, a loved one.

Anthem Angels Program

The Portland Pirates and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine have teamed up this winter to create a unique program which recognizes Maine's community heroes.

"Anthem's Community Angels program recognizes everyday heroes - people in our local community who have led, created, or otherwise been instrumental in activities that help make our community better," said Brian Petrovek, Managing Owner/CEO of the Portland Pirates.

Examples of Anthem Community Angel activities include building a playground, raising money for local non-profit agencies, and involvement in youth athletics, etc.

The Pirates are now accepting nominations for the award. Click here to submit a nomination.

Pirates and Maine Hockey Trust

Pirates forward Igor Gongalsky and Justin Bowers assisted in a Maine Hockey Trust Clinic on Wednesday at Portland Ice Arena as part of USA Hockey's Weekend Across America.

The Portland Hockey Trust, a free opportunity for all Portland kids in grades 3-5 to experience the sport of hockey despite their financial situation, promotes the physical, emotional and social well-being of youth in Portland by providing opportunities to play hockey regardless of abilities to pay.

Maine Restaurant Week

The 3rd annual Maine Restaurant Week is happening in Portland and all around Maine from March 1-12th and the Pirates are a proud sponsor of an important Restaurant Week fundraising event called the Incredible Breakfast Cook-off.

The Incredible Breakfast Cook-off is scheduled for Friday, March 4th from 7-9 a.m. at Sea Dog Brewing Company in South Portland. 100% of the event's proceeds will benefit Preble Street.

Here's the idea. Twelve of Maine's "Champions of Breakfast" are invited to the Sea Dog Brew Pub to compete. They line up side-by-side and serve small plates. Guests of the event (which sold out last year) choose whose breakfast reigns supreme. Last year Good Table Restaurant from Cape Elizabeth won top honors -- their Creme Brulee French Toast lived up to its "bring you to your knees delicious" description. They'll be back to defend their title and so will a large group of competitors, each vying for the top prize.
