Pirates Trade Pearson to Carolina
May 15, 2019 - National Arena League (NAL)
Massachusetts Pirates News Release
ys after the Pirates signed former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Dexter McCluster, the organization has announced the trade wide receiver Lavon Pearson to the Carolina Cobras for future considerations. Pearson is the Pirates all-time leader in receptions with 102 and the franchise leader in receiving yards with 1,156. He had appeared in four of the Pirates five games this season and was tied for second on the team with 19 receptions. He had two touchdowns to go along with 145 receiving yards.
"This was the hardest transaction I've made in my young career," said Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim. "Lavon will always be a part of our Pirates family and we wish him the very best down in Carolina, just not when we play against him obviously. He's been with us since day one and was a pivotal part of our success last season. He's a great kid as well and has done everything we've asked him to do. Sometimes it's just a numbers game and I felt it was a move that made the most sense to our ball club at the moment. I'd say the biggest hurdle I've been trying to get over as a young GM is essentially becoming heartless when it comes to certain transactions. I do really care about our guys and appreciate all the hard work they put into our organization. I'll always be there for Von and he knows that. I wish the absolute best for him and can't thank him enough. He'll always be a Pirate."
Last season Pearson appeared in all 16 games and led the team with 83 receptions. He was also second on squad with 1,011 receiving yards, 22 touchdown catches and an average of 63.2 receiving yards per game.
Pearson's numbers made him one of the top receivers in the National Arena League in 2018. His 83 receptions placed him second in the NAL. Pearson was also fifth in the league in TD grabs and receiving yards, seventh in yards per catch with 12.2 and 10th in receiving yards per game.
The 6'3" 185 lb. receiver stated his college career at Feather River College in Quincy, CA where he rewrote their record books. He led the nation with 93 receptions for 1,601 yards and 12 TDs in 2013. He transferred to Tennessee Volunteers where he started in 16 of his 24 games leading the team in receptions (38) and receiving yards (409) with three scores in his senior season.
Pearson had a hand in two of the most memorable plays in the Pirates first year of existence. He had not one, but two walk-off touchdown receptions in home wins over the Columbus Lions.
