
Pirates Snap Skid in Springfield

Springfield, MA - The Portland Pirates (8-10-0-0) scored five times in the third period, including three unanswered in a span of 4 minutes, 20 seconds, to beat up on the Springfield Falcons (9-9-1-0) on Sunday evening at the MassMutual Center. The win snapped the Pirates' losing streak at four games. Springfield has now lost two straight.
The Pirates struck first as Rocco Grimaldi scored his first goal as a Pirate with a spin-a-rama backhander at 12:16 of the first period. Rob Schremp and Garrett Wilson notched the assists. After a slow start, Portland ended up taking the final 12 shots on goal of the period, outshooting Springfield 15-7 in the game's first 20 minutes.
Former Pirates winger Lucas Lessio found the back of the net at 1:08 of the second period for his sixth goal of the season. Lessio's tally was assisted by Jon DiSalvatore and Daniel New.
Portland went on top for good at 7:23 of the third period as Wayne Simpson outrushed a Falcons defenseman and beat Louis Domingue for his first goal as a Pirate. Wilson picked up his second assist of the night on the play, while Cameron Gaunce picked up his team-leading 11th assist of the year.
Rob Flick scored his first goal since the team's opening game of the season, his second of the year, at 9:03, snapping the puck home after a John McFarland offensive zone faceoff win to make it 3-1.
The Pirates third unanswered goal came at 11:43 when Shane Harper broke down the right wing for his second goal of the season, unassisted.
Springfield rookie Laurent Dauphin, who began his pro career in Portland at the end of last season, scored at 15:42, tipping in a New shot from the left point. Former Pirate Greg Carey also got an assist on the six-on-five goal.
Portland finished the game off by scoring two empty net goals. Kyle Rau scored his eighth goal of the season at 17:03 from McFarland, followed by Brett Olson's unassisted goal at 19:26, his second goal of the season.
Pirates rookie net-minder Sam Brittain (2-3-0) saved 23 of 25 shots faced. Domingue (5-4-1) stopped 31 of 35 shots he faced.
