Pirates Sign WR Darren Carrington II

November 15, 2019 - National Arena League (NAL)
Massachusetts Pirates News Release

The Massachusetts Pirates have signed wide receiver Darren Carrington II for the 2020 season. Carrington had an impressive collegiate carrier in the Pac 12 where he was a two-time All-Conference selection, playing three seasons at Oregon and one at Utah as a graduate transfer. Carrington had 11 career 100-yard games including four at Utah. Carrington attended the 2018 NFL Combine and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in August, spending the preseason with the team before being released as part of the final cuts before to the start of the regular season. In October, Carrington signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Now he brings his skills to Massachusetts.

Last season, Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim opted for a receiving corps of smaller, fast, surehanded wideouts. Thomas Owens was the Pirates biggest target at 6'1" 205 lbs. With Carrington checking in at 6'3" 215 lbs., Yatim hopes production near the goal line will improve.

"I felt like we struggled last year in the red zone and it hindered our offense from really being the unit that it could have been, especially against the more competitive teams in the league. We are looking to add more size at the wide receiver position this year to help in that aspect of our game. I remember Darren from when he was in college, he was a playmaker while at Oregon and Utah and is a special talent in my opinion. I look forward to getting him up here in March and getting to work," Yatim said.

A product of San Diego, CA, Carrington had three productive years at Oregon where he recorded 112 receptions, 1,919 yards and 15 touchdowns in 33 career games. He burst onto the scene at Oregon in 2014 as a redshirt freshman. He saw action in 14 games making one start and finished the season with 37 receptions for 704 yards and four touchdowns. He was a standout in the Rose Bowl, (the National Semi-final game) catching seven balls for 165 yards and two touchdowns of 56 and 30 yards from Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota in a 59-20 win over Florida State. The Ducks were defeated by Ohio State, 42-20 in the National Championship game.

In 2015 he started five of the seven games in which he appeared catching 32 balls for 609 yards and six scores and was second team All-Pac 12. In 2016, his junior season, he started eight of 12 games with 43 receptions for 606 yards and five touchdowns and was the Ducks leading receiver.

In 2017 at Utah he played in 12 games had 70 receptions for 980 yards (averaging 14 yards per catch) and six touchdowns earning second team All-Pac 12 honors for the second time in his career.

Carrington comes from a football family. His father, Darren Carrington I, played at Northern Arizona and then played safety for eight years in the NFL for five teams as a fifth-round pick by Denver in 1989. He was the Denver Broncos kick returner in Super Bowl XXIV, which he finished with a franchise-record 6 kickoff returns for 146 yards, including a 39-yard return that set up the Broncos only touchdown of the game. He also started in Super Bowl XXIX for the San Diego Chargers. His best season was in 1993, when he intercepted 7 passes and returned them for 104 yards. He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft and finished his career with the Oakland Raiders in 1996.

The Massachusetts Pirates are members of the National Arena League (NAL). The Pirates play all home games at the DCU Center located at 50 Forster St. Worcester, MA, 01608.
