Portland Pirates News Release
KINGSTON, RI â The Portland Pirates remained unbeaten in exhibition play (3-0) with a win against the Providence Bruins, that included a hat trick from Carlyle Lewis that propelled the Pirates to a 6-2 win.
Early in the first period, the Pirates gained the momentum in the game, when the Pirates Trent Whitfield blocked a shot at the blue line on a Providence power play. Trent Whitfield seized the opportunity, and took the puck the length of the ice and riffled a wrist shot that zoomed past the glove of the Bruins goaltender Matt Underhill to put the Pirates up 1-0.
The relentless attack from the Pirates struck five minutes later at the 8:21 mark. Jared Aulin received a perfect pass from Jason Ulmer from the left side of the net. Ulmer's pass snuck through traffic in front of the net and right to Aulin and he one-timed the puck into the back of the cage to put the Pirates up 2-0.
With 3:42 left in the period, the Pirates added their final goal of the period and the first goal of the night by Carlyle Lewis. Jared Aulin fed Lewis with a cross-ice pass and Lewis from the right hand face off circle launched a quick wrist shot that snuck inside the far post to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
In the second period, the Pirates used tremendous defense to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard. Derek Gustafson (7 saves) provided the Pirates solid goaltending, in his first game between the pipes in the pre-season. With 10:12 left in the period, both teams switched goaltenders and Justin Eddy (23 saves) entered the game for the Pirates.
Just before the close of the period, at the 17:07 mark Carlyle Lewis netted his second goal of the game when he picked up a loose puck in the slot. Lewis emerged with the puck and wound around and fired a shot inside the far post and past the Bruins goaltender Nick Boucher to give the Pirates the 4-0 advantage.
The Bruins ruined the Portland's shutout bid with 5:33 left in the third period, when Brad Boyes passed the puck to Matt Dzieduszycki wide open in front, to close the score to 4-1.
The Bruins added another tally just under a minute later when the Bruins Brad Boyes sent a shot toward the Portland net that deflected off Jeff Paul and took an awkward bounce and caught Justin Eddy off guard as the Bruins cut the gap to 5-2.
Portland continued to pursue the puck in the third period and with 15 seconds left, Owen Fussey put a shot toward the Bruins net that deflected back out in the slot for Carlyle Lewis, who jammed home the rebound and putting the final touches on his hat trick and on the Pirates 6-2 win.
The Pirates home opener is scheduled for Saturday, October 16, 2004, Hockey Night in Portland, at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
