Four words listed at the top of the National Arena League Transaction's page broke the news, sounding an alarm in Massachusetts that may only have been rivaled by the legendary midnight ride of Paul Revere.

"Massachusetts Release Sean Brackett."

Were the Pirates really parting ways with their MVP quarterback? One could speculate how a move like that could ever be made, but when you understand the circumstances, it makes total sense.

"It's not as it seems really," Brackett said. "I had an opportunity to throw at the Boston College Pro Day. They have a few guys I've been working with, throwing to them, working on their routes and stuff like that. They were looking for someone to throw to them during their Pro Day and obviously I was free, so I went through the process of doing that."

That process led to Brackett's agent connecting with a few NFL scouts who said to make things "easier" they wanted the quarterback to have a "full release" from any contract he was currently under.

Pirates Owner and General Manager Jawad Yatim has always said he wants his players to move up to the next level and it would be a feather in his cap if something were to come from his quarterback in a pro tryout.

"It's a great opportunity for Sean to throw in front of all 32 NFL teams, Yatim said. "From day one he's been a hardworking, persistent leader for us and it is always nice to see your players get an opportunity to elevate their respective careers. Due to Boston College's pro day regulations I was advised we had to relieve Sean from his contract with the Pirates so he could pursue this opportunity. It's not an ideal situation for us, but at the same time it's all about our guys and doing what's best for their careers. Certainly, I'm rooting for him to put on a show out there and wish all the best to every athlete performing at Boston College's pro day."

As fate would have it, the workout scheduled for March 18, will not take place due to the coronavirus.

"That is correct," Brackett said with a sigh. "It has been postponed indefinitely. We'll see how that changes. It's a fluid situation. We'll wait and see and stay ready," he added.

As for Brackett coming back to the Pirates, that is a waiting game as well.

"Yes, 100 percent. Whenever I'm cleared to go to training camp, I'll be there. I'm still going to be a part of the team with practices and meetings, but I'm not going to re-sign until I go through the Pro Day process. If that doesn't happen then I'll re-sign and be ready to go for the season. Nothing really changes. I'm excited to play for the Pirates if nothing comes from it. This just gives me the opportunity to play in the NFL," he said.

Brackett has always appreciated the support from Yatim and the Pirates organization.

"Absolutely, that's why we do what we do. I know Jawad loves the game. Football has been my profession for a few years now and the NFL is the pinnacle of the profession. Any chances that you can take advantage of to get in front of pro scouts and get as many eyes as you can get on you; you have to take advantage of that. Jawad does a great job of getting us contacts and getting those eyes not only on me but on the rest of the team as well from the XFL and CFL. It's an exciting time but unfortunately with the coronavirus, it's not great timing but we'll see what happens. "
