Pirates Fall to Bruins 5-2

Portland, Me. - The Portland Pirates (37-24-5-1) lost 5-2 to the Providence Bruins (36-23-7-1) on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. Coming into the game, Portland held the 5 th place spot in the AHL's Eastern Conference, leading Providence by just one point in the standings. By the end of the game however, the Bruins reclaimed that 5 th spot, tied with Hartford, both teams having 81 points. The Pirates sunk to 7 th place in the conference with 80.

Eric Selleck got the game started with a goal at 13:16 in the first, assisted by Brendan Shinnimin and Dylan Reese to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. It wouldn't last long, however. Paul Carey tied it up for the Bruins at 16:05 with help from Chris Breen and Ethan Werek.

Providence took the lead one minute into the second period with a goal from Colin Stuart, assisted by Andrew Cherniwchan. Stuart netted a second goal at 4:54, assisted by Tommy Cross. Providence put up their third goal of the frame at 7:10 when Cherniwchan scored one of his own, assisted by Brian Ferlin and Breen.

Lucas Lessio cut into Providence's lead at 13:05 in the third to make it 4-2, assisted by Corey Trivino and Tyler Gaudet. The Bruins locked the game up with a goal from Rob Flick at 17:59, assisted by Breen.

Mike McKenna (26-15-4) started in net for the Pirates and was credited with the loss, stopping 8 of 11 shots. He came out at 4:54 in the second period, after the second Stuart goal. David Leggio (8-14-0) replaced McKenna in the crease, stopping 17 of 18 shots. Jeremy Smith (19-9-5) minded goal for Providence, stopping 20 of 22 shots.

The Pirates return to action on Friday, April 3 to take on the Manchester Monarchs at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. It will be another exciting VIP Cup matchup presented by VIP Tires and Service. For tickets and more information call 207- PIRATES.
