
Pirates Beat Sound Tigers

The visiting Portland Pirates defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-2 before 6,330 fans at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Motzko scored twice and Mark Hartigan had four assists to help the Pirates salvage a season series split with the Sound Tigers. Bridgeport dropped to 33-30-1-5 but remains in fourth place, two points ahead of Albany in the race for the East Division's final playoff spot. Portland avenged Saturday's loss to the Sound Tigers and improved to 31-27-3-9.
The Pirates struck first when Greg Amadio netted his second goal of the season 2:21 into the game. Amadio scored from the slot while falling to the ice with a high shot that beat Sound Tigers' goaltender Wade Dubielewicz. The Sound Tigers responded just 37 seconds later; Jason Pitton was set up by Jamie Johnson for his ninth goal at 2:58. The Pirates regained their lead when Motzko scored at 16:58 of the first.
The Sound Tigers again deadlocked the score when Frans Nielsen scored a shorthanded tally at 17:05 of the second stanza. Mark Wotton assisted Nielsen's 20th goal of the campaign which tied the score at two apiece. It took only 35 seconds for the Pirates to again go ahead. Motzko scored his 24th of the year from a sharp angle when he roofed a shot into the far upper corner of the goal at the 17:40 mark to make the score 3-2.
Mike Hoffman extended the Pirates' lead to 4-2 with his ninth goal just 2:16 into the third period and Drew Miller capped the scoring with his 12th goal at 16:22.
The Pirates outshot the Sound Tigers 27-25 and David McKee made 23 saves to win his first American Hockey League game.
The Sound Tigers were 0-for-5 on the power play and the Pirates went 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
