Pippins Salvage Final Game in Wenatchee

WENATCHEE, Wash. - Behind another quality pitching performance, the Yakima Valley Pippins salvaged the final game in their series with Wenatchee, winning the series finale by a score of 3-1.

Early on, Zach Wolf for Yakima Valley and Gage Burland for Wenatchee found themselves in a quality pitcher's duel. Burland allowed just three hits over the first six innings and Wolf didn't allow a hit through his first three innings. The AppleSox (19-23) picked up back-to-back doubles to begin the 4th and took a 1-0 lead.

In the 7th, the Pippins (22-20) finally broke through against Burland. After a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt to begin the inning, Corey Morris delivered a go-ahead, two-run single to give the Pippins a 2-1 lead. An error helped bring home an insurance run in the 8th.

For the Pippins bullpen, that would be enough. Josh Nashed worked three innings, allowing just one hit to pick up the win. Ryan Lillie worked a scoreless 8th inning and Wyatt Mills did the same in the 9th to pick up his eighth save of the season. Over the final 19 innings of the series, the Pippins held Wenatchee to just seven hits.

The Pippins remain one game back of Corvallis in the wild card race with Sunday's win. Yakima Valley returns home Monday at 7:05 pm to begin a three-game series with the Medford Rogues (19-23) at Yakima County Stadium. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game as part of Bark in the Park Night.
