Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

KELOWNA, B.C. - After allowing the Kelowna Falcons to walk off with an 11-10 victory Saturday night, the Pippins returned the favor Sunday, scoring twice in the 9th inning to claim a 9-7 victory over the Falcons at Elks Stadium.

Just like Saturday's contest, the two teams continued to go back and forth. Kelowna (14-28) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with runs in the 1 st and the 2 nd innings. The first run was charged to starter Brandon Williams, before Connor Lau came on in relief of the right-hander, who was pulled after facing just three hitters (precautionary reasons).

The Pippins (24-18) countered with a run in the 3 rd on a bases-loaded walk for Vince Fernandez, before taking a 4-2 lead in the 5 th on an RBI single by Shawn Wardian and a two-run home run for Nick Kern, his first of the season.

After Kelowna tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the 5 th, the Pippins took another two-run lead in the 6 th, this time courtesy of a fielding error by third baseman Josh Croft.

Once again, the Falcons had an answer. Kelowna got to reliever Matt Trask in the bottom of the 7 th, scoring three runs to take a 7-6 lead. Kern then showed his skills on the mound, shutting down the Falcons the rest of the inning.

As the cat-and-mouse battle continued, the Pippins tied the game in the top of the 8 th on an RBI single by Mitch Skaggs to pull the Pippins even at 7-7.

After Kern worked a scoreless 8 th inning, the Pippins pulled ahead in the 9 th inning. Ryan Yamane broke the tie with an RBI single to left field, before Alex Guenette gave Yakima Valley an insurance run to make it 9-7.

Kenny Rosenberg came on in the bottom of the 9 th and allowed a pair of runners to reach 2 nd and 3 rd, but got the final out on a flyout to left to seal the win and get the Pippins their fifth road series win out of seven total series away from home. Yakima Valley takes Monday off before heading to Walla Walla Tuesday-Thursday for their final regular season series with the Walla Walla Sweets.
