YAKIMA, WA - George Mendazona provided the game-winning double in the top of the 11th inning and the Yakima Valley Pippins fell short, 5-4, on Father's Day at Yakima County Stadium.
Jay Schuyler (San Diego) led the Pippins with three hits, now reaching base in all 14 games this season, including an RBI single in the 1st inning. Christian Koss (UC Irvine) scored that first run, collecting two hits in the losing effort.
The Pippins would add on in the second inning as Chris Ceballos (Cal State Fullerton) delivered his West Coast League leading 5th double of the season, scoring Cameron Haskell (UC Riverside), who started the inning with a double. Michael Filia (UC Irvine) posted an RBI sacrifice fly, giving the Pippins a 3-0 lead.
Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona) posted a two-hit effort, including the game-tying RBI in the 7th inning, 3-3, scoring Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga), who finished 1-5 at the plate.
Jordan Bocko (UC Irvine) pitched six innings in his first start of the season, allowing three unearned runs while striking out two. Ryan Garcia (UCLA) took the loss pitching 4.1 innings of relief, striking out six and allowing one earned run.
The Pippins mounted a rally in the 11th inning, but Jack Sandberg (San Diego) struck out with the bases loaded to end the contest.
The Yakima Valley Pippins (9-5) have now dropped three straight games for the first time all season, returning home Monday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Gresham GreyWolves. Fans can listen live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
