Pippins Escape Jams, Capitalize for Win over Bellingham

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, never looking back for a 6-2 series-opening win over the Bellingham Bells on Tuesday night at Yakima County Stadium.
Christian Koss (UC Irvine) led the Pippins with two RBI, scoring Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga) in the 1st inning after his leadoff double. The Pippins (20-14, 5-2) would then add two more in the 3rd and 4th inning featuring an RBI base hit from Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge), who leads the Pippins with 10 hits and four RBI over his last six games.
Andrew Bernstein (Cal Poly Slo) earned his second win of the season working effectively through 5.2 innings, allowing zero earned runs on nine hits, striking out four. The Pippins pitching staff combined to strike out 11 batters, forcing Bellingham to strand 15 men on base.
Matt Fish (Lewis-Clark State) helped Bernstein escape the 6th inning with a crucial strikeout as the Bells were threatening with the bases loaded down 5-1. Ryan Garcia (UCLA) pitched the final 2.1 innings of relief, striking out the side in the 9th inning while allowing one run.
Chris Ceballos (Cal State Fullerton) led the Pippins with three hits in the winning effort, including his 9th double of the year. Jay Schuyler (San Diego) and Trevor Achenbach (Oklahoma Wesleyan) also added RBI in the Pippins second win of the season against Bellingham.
West Coast League Pitcher of the Week Gavin Velasquez (Cal State Fullerton) will start on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. as the Pippins search for the series win over Bellingham. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
