Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - A shortstop who has started the spring with a hot bat and an incoming freshman pitcher from Washington are the latest additions to the Pippins' 2016 roster.
Trevor Achenbach is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior shortstop from Billings, Mont. Prior to transferring to Oklahoma Wesleyan, he played community college baseball at Clackamas. Alden Huschle is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior pitcher at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, Wash., who will attend Seattle University this fall.
"Trevor and Aiden are both very talented but from very different worlds," Pippins manager Marcus McKimmy said. "Huschle is full of youth and power but has yet to step on a college baseball field, and Achenbach has started pretty much every game in his college career on the infield and is going to really be able to really create offense for us this summer. I can't wait to get both of these guys to Yakima."
Achenbach has gotten off to a torrid start this spring. In 19 games for NAIA second-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan (14-5), he's leading the team with a .500 batting average and 31 hits, including three doubles, two triples and three home runs. He also has 23 RBIs, six walks, four stolen bases and has been hit by pitch 12 times.
"I've known about Trevor for some time after playing for Clackamas and being an all-conference infielder in the NWAC," McKimmy said. "He's a shortstop whose bat will really be an upgrade to a position that has been mainly defensive for us the past two years. I'm very confident his experience as an upperclassman will be a huge factor day in and day out for the Pippins.
"Alden is a high-profile high school pitcher with a big fastball," McKimmy said. "It's a rare thing for a high school senior to make our roster, but the development he's shown recently has been significant and is a credit to his work ethic. He showed well at the Area Code Games in Long Beach in the fall and I expect him to really impress this spring at Mount Si. I know coaches Wells and Hull will be a huge benefit to Alden this summer to prepare him for the next level."
The Pippins open the 2016 season Friday, June 3, at Wenatchee. Yakima Valley's home opener is slated for Monday, June 6, at 7:05 p.m. against 2015 West Coast League champion Bend, Ore. Season tickets and ticket mini plans are available for purchase at Hunky Shaw's Team Shop, 12 S. Second St. in the historic Larson Building in downtown Yakima. Ticket packages also can be purchased by calling 509-575-4487 or online at pippinsbaseball.com.
