Elmira Pioneers News Release

Elmira, NY- A two run third coupled with a single run in the fifth inning helped guide the Pioneers to a 3-1 win on Wednesday night.

Cleatus Davidson gave the Pioneers their first two runs of the night with a one out double to left-center field to score Ryan Smith, who doubled earlier in the inning and Digz Edwards who singled. In the fourth inning Davidson flashed the leather making an unbelievable diving grab to start an inning ending double play, leaving a runner stranded on third. The Pioneers added another insurance run in the sixth inning after Dennis Abreu led the inning off with a perfectly placed bunt. Jeremy Dodson then followed suit with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jason Bryan singled in Abreu to put the Pio's ahead 3-0.

In the ninth closer Matt Elfeldt came on and picked up his second save of the season to preserve the win for Elmira. Elfeldt allowed a run in the ninth on one hit and one hit batter while striking out two.

Pioneers starter Chris Zallie (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three, in what was one of the best outings of the season from the Elmira starting rotation.
