Pioneers Shut Out by Adirondack

Sunday, July 28, 2002 - Dunn Field, Elmira, NY The Sunday curse continued for the Elmira Pioneers in a 4-0 setback to the Elmira Pioneers at Dunn Field. Elmira has dropped their last 8 Sunday games by a combined score of 60-13. The Pioneers are 1-9 on Sundays this year and 2-9 in day games. Elmira is 33-15 in night games this season. It was the 4th time this season the Pioneers have been shutout and the first time it has happened at home.

Elmira finished 3-3 on their homestand after dropping 2 out of 3 to the Lumberjacks. Adirondack has had the most success against the Pioneers going 6-3 thus far in the season series. Joe Magri (1-0) spun 5.1ip of effective 3-hit ball for victory and Quentin Jones threw the final 3.2ip for his 1st save also allowing just 3 hits.

Shigeki Sano (1-2) was the losing pitcher going 6.1ip allowing 9h, 4r, 3er, 1bb, 4k. Pedro Quero had 3 of Elmira's 6 hits. Lorenzo de La Cruz led the Adirondack attack going 3-for-5 with 2 rbi's.

The Lumberjacks outhit the Pioneers 11-5 as Elmira had difficulties keeping their runners on base. Two runners were picked off in the 1st 2 innings by Magri. Ron Bush reached on an error in the 4th inning but took a wide turn around 1st base and was tagged out in a rundown. The Pioneers also had a hit-and-run double-play in the 7th inning when Osmani Garcia lined out to RF and Pedro Quero kept running all the way around to 3rd making for an easy force-out at 1st.

Adirondack pushed a couple runs in the top of the 1st to begin the game following a 48 minute rain-delay. Mitsuru Kobayashi walked and was bunted to 2nd. After stealing 3rd he scored on a single to right-center by De La Cruz who eventually crossed the plate on singles by Juan Silvestre and Steve King. The final hit of the inning was a little infield single back up the middle but Ron bush slipped on the wet turf and was unableto make the play. Brad Hargreaves led off the 3rd inning reaching on a throwing error by SS Rolando Bello. Eppy Guerrero and De Lz Cruz had back to back singles to drive home Hargreaves increasing the Lumberjacks lead to 3-0. Guerrero singled in the 7th to RF and stole 2nd and 3rd. With 1 out Juan Silvestre walked. Matt Pike replaced Sano and struck out Steve King. With Todd Brock batting Silvestre took off from 1st and got hung up in a run-down long enough to allow Guerrero to score. The Pioneers got the out on Silvestre but Guerrero touched the plate moments before the final out was recorded.

Elmira had a few hard-hit balls off of Joe Magri in the 4th and 5th innings. Alvarez and Jones both hit towering deep flies to RF in the 4th with plenty of HR distance but both hooked foul. The Pioneers hit a couple of long fly-outs to the warning track in the 5th. Elmira got only 1 runner as far as 3rd base on the afternoon.

The Pioneers take a day off on Monday before returning to action Tuesday night at Albany-Colonie with Greg Keagle (4-7) taking the mound in the opener of a 3-game series with the North Division leading Diamond Dogs. Elmira continues the road trip next Friday through Sunday at New Jersey before the 3-day Northern League all-Star Break. Elmira's next home game is Thursday, August 8 vs. Allentown. Saturday August 10 is Pepsi Fireworks Night at Dunn Field with WENY-TV.
