
Black Bears Drop Third Straight To Jackals

WILMINGTON, DE â Eric Nelson smacked a two-run triple to highlight a six-run fifth inning to lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks past the Kinston Indians, 10-5, Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. Justin Cowan recorded two hits and two RBI as Zach McClellan earned his first win since June 22. The Blue Rocks secured the three-game series from Kinston and have won 21 of 32 series played in 2002.
The Blue Rocks (67-39; 20-16) scored three times in the first inning off starting pitcher Derek Thompson. Cowan singled home the first run of the afternoon, while later in the inning, both Cowan and Justin Gemoll scored on a Thompson wild pitch.
The Indians (49-53; 15-18) cut the Rocks' lead to 3-1 on an Alex Requena RBI double in the third. The K-Tribe scored three times to take the lead in the fourth, 4-3, on RBI from Joe Inglett, Rickie Morton and Jeff DePippo. Wilmington tied the score at 4-4 on a Tony Arnerich RBI single in the fourth.
The Rocks scored their final five runs in the sixth behind a Cowan RBI single, a pair of sacrifice flies (RBI from Gemoll and Chad Santos) and the Nelson two-run triple.
McClellan (7-7) pitched five innings in the start, allowing four runs on nine hits, fanning three Indians. Jamie Eppeneder pitched the sixth inning, while Dusty Wrightsman threw two innings, allowing a hit on two strikeouts. Jorge Vasquez saw his first Wilmington action, surrendering one run on two hits, fanning one Kinston batter. Doug Lantz (0-1) dropped the game in relief in his first action in a Kinston uniform.
BLUE ROCKS NOTES: The Blue Rocks hit the road for a seven-game road trip, which includes a three-game stop at Potomac and a four-game series at Frederick. The Rocks and Cannons battle on Monday night as Wes Wilkerson (5-4) will take to the mound for the Blue Rocks. The Rocks are now 28 games above the .500 mark for the first time in 2002. The Rocks are 13-12 in July and 11-5 on Sunday. The Blue Rocks won their 28th game this season in come-from-behind fashion. Cowan has now hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games.
The Blue Rocks celebrate their 10th Anniversary all season long in 2002.
