Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have announced that fundraising efforts for the Sherwood Baker Memorial Fund will continue for the duration of the team's 2004 season in the event that the "Camp Out to Sell Out" initiative falls short if its goal.

"In the event that we don't reach our goal, the fundraising initiative will be an ongoing process for the rest of our season," said Pioneers President Dave Berryman.

"We are committed to honoring Sherwood's memory and helping the Baker family, plain and simple," he continued. "I asked our staff to make personal sacrifices this week, and they went well beyond my expectations. We're not going to give up on this cause."

Although no specific plans have been finalized, the Pioneers will likely attempt to raise additional funds through the team's annual end-of-the-season jersey auction, as well as other contests.

As of 3:00pm Friday, the team estimates 4,500 tickets have been either purchased or ordered for tomorrow's gave against the Manchester Wolves. The Pioneers had hoped to present a check for $20,000 to the family of Sherwood Baker during halftime of Saturday's game if it was a sellout.

"Unfortunately, if the game isn't sold out, we will be forced to wait until a later date to present the Bakers with a check," said Berryman. "We are asking the community again to help us help this family."

The game, which has been designated as Military Appreciation Night, will also feature an induction ceremony at halftime for 25 U.S. Army enlistees.

Fans may inquire about ticket availability for the June 5th game by calling the team at (570) 270-5811 or (570) 270-3848. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets may also do so by visiting the "Pioneer Village," located directly in front of 275 Mundy Street in Wilkes-Barre Township.
