Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - Andy Pineda belted two home runs and Corbin Martin fired six sterling innings as the Hooks rolled to a 5-2 victory over Northwest Arkansas in the series opener at Arvest Ballpark.
Corpus Christi (7-3, 50-29) is the first Double-A club to reach the 50-win plateau.
Josh Rojas ignited the afternoon with a no-doubt solo home run to right field off lefty Emilio Ogando (4-5) in the second.
The Hooks added another marker in the third. Anibal Sierra cracked a lead-off double and then scored on Yordan Alvarez's two-out base hit to right.
Pineda, who entered the game in the second to play left field for Carmen Benedetti, got his first AB in with two away in the fourth. The 21-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, in just his second game above the short-season level, launched a 1-0 pitch over the right-field fence to make it 3-0 Hooks.
Pineda's two-run bomb in the sixth put Corpus Christi up by five.
Martin (5-1) faced one over the minimum through the first five innings.
The Naturals netted two runs (one earned) in the sixth on three singles and an error. Martin stranded two on base in the frame.
The Hempstead, TX, native has yielded one earned run or none in nine of his last 10 assignments.
Rehabbing Astro Joe Smith sidestepped a lead-off infield single in the seventh, and lefty Alex Winkelman blanked the Naturals over the final two frames to secure his second save.
Corpus Christi aims for its third straight win Monday night with lefty Ryan Hartman (6-3, 3.09) on the hill. Scott Blewett (4-4, 5.70) takes the ball for Northwest Arkansas. First pitch 6:35.
