Newark tied for division lead with two wins in Watertown After winning both games in their doubleheader against the Watertown Wizards (10-14) on Saturday, the Newark Pilots (14-10) have moved into a tie for first place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's West Division.
The Pilots scored seven runs in the final inning for the 12-6 comeback victory in the first game. The Wizards were blanked in the nightcap by Shayne Herold (Ashland), who threw a complete-game shutout for the 4-0 win. By league rule, both games of the doubleheader were only seven innings.
Newark 12, Watertown 6
The Watertown Wizards entered the top of the seventh with a 6-5 lead, but the Pilots recorded seven runs on six hits for the come-from-behind win.
Matt Vera (San Joaquin Delta) drove in the game-tying run with a one-out single. Vera, who already hit a two-run homer in the fifth, then scored what would be the game-winning run two batters later on a base hit from Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan).
Up 8-6 with two outs, the Pilots hit back-to-back triples to extend their lead. Jacob Starnes (UT Dallas) hit a three-run triple, followed by another from Michael Bolling (Lewis) to bring home Starnes.
The Wizards hadnjumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the fourth inning. Alex Maldonado (Holy Cross) reached base safely on the first of three Newark errors in the frame, allowing Chris Gruarin (Canisius) to score. On the same play, Erick Gaylord (Campbell) was ruled out at third for missing the base while heading home. Watertown scored three more unearned runs before the end of the inning.
Rob Rodgers (Keystone) took the loss after being chased off the mound during the Pilots' big seventh inning. Rodgers pitched six and one-third innings and surrendered nine runs on eight hits. Maldonado went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI to lead Watertown.
Newark's Jim Glasgow (Lewis) took the mound for three relief innings and earned his first win of the season. Bolling had an outstanding night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
Newark 4, Watertown 0
Herold threw the third complete game in as many days for the Pilots in the nightcap. In his second start of the year, Herold allowed only four hits while fanning nine.
Watertown starter Rob Curran (Rhode Island) also manned the bump for the entire game despite yielding four earned runs on 12 hits in his second loss.
Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) gave Newark a 1-0 lead in the first with a RBI single. Attl was the Pilots' top batter in Game 2, finishing 4-for-4 with one run and two RBI's.
The Wizards had a chance to answer as Maldonado hit one of two consecutive singles to start the bottom of the first. Herold quickly ended the inning striking out the next three batters.
Extra base hits padded the Newark lead. Delvalle hit his league-leading 11th double of the season to get into scoring position in the fifth. He came around and scored later in the frame to put the Pilots up 2-0. Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) doubled in the seventh followed by a RBI triple from Attl to score one of two runs in the final inning.
The Newark Pilots are on the road again Sunday as they bring their six-game win streak to Elmira for a 6 p.m. game against the Pioneers. The Watertown Wizards play another doubleheader against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes starting at 12:30 p.m.
