Pilots Sweep Doubleheader from Glens Falls

It was a perfect evening for baseball so the Pilots and Golden Eagles decided to play two... and a little extra. The two teams were making up a game that was postponed due to rain back on June 11th. Newark and Glens Falls had opened their seasons verse one another back on June 4th where the Pilots came out on top 4-1. Steve Colella (UMass-Dartmouth) took the hill for the hometown Pilots.
Newark trailed 1-0 going into the bottom half of the third when the bats came to life. Wyatt Padgett (BYU) lead off the frame with a harmless single to right field which managed to bounce between the Golden Eagle outfielder and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Padgett to get to third base on the error. Tommy Wagner (Cornell) got the Pilots on the board when he singled through the left side. Next up Conrad Ziemendorf (SUNY Cortland) went shopping at the gap and tripled all the way to right center wall to put Newark ahead 2-1. Braxton Wilkes (Kansas State) copied what his fellow outfielder did and he tripled to the left center gap. The big blast came when Luis Silver (Palm Beach CC) homered right down the left field line and the Pilots scored five runs in frame.
Glens Falls didn't take long to respond as they tacked two runs in the top of the fourth with a pair of sacrifice flies by J.Q Folena (Cabrillo) and Kairee Tekra (Cuyahoga CC) to cut the lead to 5-3. Tempers boiled over for head coach Mike Armstrong in the top of the sixth. BJ Nobles (Western Carolina) came on in relief with runners on second and third for the Pilots and with two outs and a 2-1 count, thought he had stuck out Tekra. The pitch was called a ball much to the disgust of the Pilots and on the very next one, Tekra singled to right field tying the game at five a piece. After the inning Armstrong was ejected while walking to the third base coaching box for giving the home plate umpire his thought on the call.
The scored stayed at 5-5 much past the scheduled seven innings and in the eleventh Dorian Hairston (Kentucky) led off the frame with double just inside the left field line. Wagner moved Hairston to third on a sacrifice bunt and then it was Derek Reed's (St. Rose) time to play hero as he drove the ball to left field which was deep enough to let Hairston jog home with plenty of time giving the Pilots the 6-5 walk off win in their first extra inning game of the season. Spencer Thomas (Georgria College) picked up the win in relief for Newark as they snapped a two game losing streak and improved to 7-4.
Game two saw Jayson Yano (Stevens) pitch masterfully around danger and baserunners for the complete game going seven innings surrendering only one run. Yano shattered six hits, walked two, struck out five and got solid defense and well timed double plays to escape jams in the second and fourth inning.
Offensively the Pilots picked up were they left off in game one. Silverio reached on an infield in the top of the first and promptly stole second base. Tanner Giesel (Northeastern CC) drove one through the right side which brought in Silverio. After a walk and a ground out allowed Giesel to get to third, he hustled home on a wild pitch and Newark led 2-0 early. In the second Wilkes doubled home Logan Boyher (Columbia) and the lead was 3-0 after two.
The Pilots added some insurance in the fifth and sixth including a three run triple by Wiggins, who also caught all eighteen innings, and cruised to a 9-1 victory. Newark now 8-4 on the year and have a quick turn around as they head to Elmira to take on the Pioneers for the third time in five nights. First pitch 7:05pm
