Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release
Trey Stover (Lock Haven, PA/Hartford) hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 12th to seal the win for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs as they defeated the visiting Elmira Pioneers, 7-4.
It looked to be a high-scoring affair from the outset, as Mohawk Valley scored four runs in the first inning off of three Elmira (7-4) errors. Then, pitcher Taylor Ahearn (Santee, CA/Siena), usually an outfielder for the Pioneers, calmed down and pitched four solid innings before being pulled in the fifth.
After that, it turned into a pitching duel for both sides, but not before another Taylor, this time Taylor Skerpon (Sayre, PA/Penn State), would hit a three-run home run off of Mohawk Valley (7-4) starter Bryan Greig in the sixth to tie the game at four.
After that, it became a pitchers duel, with reliever Terry Dugdale (Amherst, NH/SUNY Albany) and four Elmira pitchers pitching perfect ball up until the 11th. Dugdale would get the win for the Diamond Dawgs
Elmira would actually only allow two hits up until the 12th, when pitcher Zach Bican (Columbia Station, OH/Pitt-Bradford) started the inning by hitting Diamond Dawg left fielder Tyler Lau (Cary, IL/ Niagara University). Bican would allow one more hitter, third baseman Nick Fazio, to reach base before Stover would hit his winning home run and send Bican home with the loss.
With the win, Mohawk Valley snaps the Pioneers' five-game winning streak, while extending their own streak to two games.
The Diamond Dawgs will play a twin bill tomorrow, as they will host the Adirondack Trail Blazers in a make-up game from last week. As they did on June 8 against Elmira, Mohawk Valley will be wearing special jerseys for their second game and auctioning them off to raise money for childhood cancer research.
The Pioneers will look to stay atop the Western Division, as they will host second-place Newark at Dunn Field tomorrow.
