Newark Pilots News Release
WATERTOWN, NY- The Newark Pilots (22-17) took over first place in the PGCBL West Division with a 12-3 win over the Watertown Rams (21-17) in Watertown. Cam Sacalazo (NC Central) picked up the win for the Pilots while Corbin Powers (Bellevue) took the loss for Watertown.
Newark jumped on the board in the first, using three two-out singles to manufacture a lone run. Austin Clock (Cortland State) provided the third single, his being hit to center field and scoring Luis SIlverio (Palm Beach State). The Pilots added another run in the second on a Tommy Wagner (Cornell) RBI single. Newark scored three more runs in the third inning to push its lead to 5-0. A throwing error allowed one run to score and Zach Wall (Young Harris) brought home the other two with an RBI double to left field.
Watertown scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth on a Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) RBI single through the right side, scoring Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Newark got that run back in the sixth inning on a Tanner Giesel (Southeastern CC) RBI double to right center.
The Rams made it a three run game in the sixth, scoring two runs. Ben Wylly (San Diego) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run and Drew Hercik (East Stroudsburg) brought in the other with an RBI fielder's choice.
The Pilots, as they did all night, responded with four runs in the following inning. Tommy Wagner hit his second RBI single of the game, this one scoring two runs, and Samm Wiggins (Houston Baptist) brought in the other two with an 2-RBI double. Newark extended its lead to 12-3 in the eighth. Wagner again hit an RBI single and Luis SIlverio brought in the second run with an RBI groundout to short.
Newark finished with 14 hits on the night, five of which came off the bat of Tanner Giesel. Giesel's five hits ties Trey Stover's (Mohawk Valley) five-hit game against Glens Falls on June 23 for the most in a single game this season. Two of Giesel's hits were doubles and he leads the PGCBL with 13 two-baggers.
Wagner, Austin Clock and Zach Wall were the other Newark players to tally multiple hits. Wagner finished with four RBIs on the night.
Josh Hassell (Holy Cross) came off the bench for Watertown and provided two hits to lead the Rams offense. Both Jason Scholl (Eastern Illinois), Robbie Alessandrine (Monmouth) and Willi Martin (Mount Olive) walked two times.
Cam Scalazo improved to 2-0 on the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing the three runs (all earned) on three hits and striking out four. Corbin Powers (Bellevue) went five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits to move to 4-3 on the season. Jason Martin (Cortland State-Fall 2014) made his Watertown debut in the eighth inning, allowing two runs with only one being earned.
The two teams face off again on Wednesday with a double-header in Newark. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
