Mohawk Valley and Albany score in bunches, Diamond Dawgs make Dutchmen blue

The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs and Albany Dutchmen spent most of their game Tuesday night in Little Falls scoring runs in bunches.

Both teams would score five runs before the sixth inning, but it would be the Diamond Dawgs who would score more, as they scored four in the seventh and three in the eighth, defeating the Dutchmen, 12-5.

The Diamond Dawgs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, as Zach Collett (Westbrook, ME/New Haven) slapped a bouncing ball to the second-third gap that Albany shortstop Danny Hrbek (Effort, PA/Radford) could not catch, scoring Joey Carcone (Utica, NY/St. Rose). They would add on another run soon after, as a throwing error by Albany first baseman Alex Jewett rocketed into left field, scoring Eric Strano (Robbinsville, NJ/Rider). A wild pitch by pitcher Juan Hernandez (Perth Amboy, NJ/Dean College) would score Collett a few batters later. Hernandez would face eight Mohawk Valley batters before putting out three straight to end the inning.

Mohawk Valley would tack on two more in the very next inning, as a long single to center field by Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, IN/Cincinnati) would score Carcone and Andy LaLonde (Bedford, NH/Southern New Hampshire).

The Dutchmen would get some runs back in the top of the third inning, as Hrbek slammed a home run to right-center to cut the lead to 5-1. Sean Aspinall (Upland, CA/Azusa Pacific) would cut the lead to three four batters later, as his RBI single would score Ernie Clement (Rochester, NY/Virginia) from second.

Albany would chip away at the lead further, getting one more run back in the fifth inning, as a passed ball by LaLonde would score Clement. They would get another just one batter later on a throwing error by Carcone to close the lead to 5-4. They would tie the score one more batter later, as an RBI single by Justin Brock (Latham, NY/Franklin Pierce) would score Cameron Miller (Houston, TX/Baylor).

Diamond Dawg starter Mike DeCarlo (Wynantskill, NY/Herkimer College)started out stellar, not giving up a hit before Hrbek's home run, but then began faltering, seeing eight Dutchmen in the third and seven in the fifth before being pulled by reliever Evan Kissinger (Baton Rouge, LA/LSU-Eunice) in the top of the sixth inning. Hernandez would not allow another run in his six innings of work for the Dutchmen and he would be pulled for Dylan McGee (Katy, TX/Trinity) in the seventh.

Mohawk Valley would pull back ahead in the seventh, as a double by Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY/Sacred Heart) squirted past the shortstop, into left field and scored Strano. Mike Triller (Rutland, VT/Clemson) would extend that lead to three, as a 2-RBI single would score both Hawk and Sullivan. That would end McGee's night after only 2/3 of an inning, getting pulled for Josh Ferry (Lemont, IL/Illinois). Gus Craig (Eugene, Oregon/Columbia) would extend the lead to four on a double, scoring Triller, but would get caught trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning.

Kissinger would throw 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, throwing two strikeouts for the Diamond Dawgs before being pulled for Nick Petrella (West Sayville, NY/Skidmore) in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth Mohawk Valley would send another run home, courtesy of a wild pitch by Ferry that would score Greg Fazio (Fair Hills, NJ/Rider). That would be the last pitch Ferry would throw, as he would be pulled for Jamie Young (Lipscomb). Young would continue walking in runs, as he walked in LaLonde to extend the lead to six. Triller would add another run on a single to center field that would score Carcone. Ferry and Young would combine to face nine Diamond Dawgs in the inning before striking out Craig to end the inning.

Dylan Boisclair (Cumberland, RI/Millersville) would pitch 1 2/3 innings to slam the door on the Dutchmen and extend the Diamond Dawgs' winning streak to two games. The Dutchmen, with the loss, extend their own losing streak to two games as well.

Kissinger would pick up his first win for Mohawk Valley, upping his record to 1-2. Ferry would get the loss for Albany, dropping his record to 0-1 in 12 appearances.

Starting tomorrow, the Diamond Dawgs will play six games in three days in the form of three doubleheaders, starting at East Field in Glens Falls as they will face off against the Golden Eagles. Albany will try to keep pace for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division as they will have an off day on Wednesday before facing the same Glens Falls team on Thursday.
