Morehead City Marlins News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- On a hot and humid evening at Big Rock Stadium, the Peninsula Pilots (12-15-1) took the CPL first half finale from the Morehead City Marlins (10-17) by a score of 9-5.

The Pilots used a six-run second inning to propel them to a 6-0 lead that they never relinquished. Danny Grauer hit a solo home run to begin the frame before the next seven batters all reached base for the Pilots as they put up a six-spot in the inning.

The Marlins answered with one run in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded walk issued to Landon Moseley. Then in the fourth inning, the Marlins scored another on an RBI-single by Chad Shannon to cut the lead to 6-2.

In the fifth, the Marlins again cut the deficit, this time on a two-run home run off the bat of Matt Anderson. Then in the seventh, the Marlins made it a one-run game when Sal Annunziata doubled and later came around to score on a single by Eric Peterson that made the score 6-5.

However, in the eighth inning the Pilots tacked on another run before ending a Marlins threat in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one out, Pilots reliever Stephen Richter struck out three consecutive Marlins to end the threat unscathed.

The Pilots scored two more runs in the ninth inning to take a 9-5 lead before Morehead City went down quietly in the ninth.

Eric Buckland (2-2) earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits. Steve Landell (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on five hits in just two innings pitched.

Leading the Marlins offensively was Annunziata and Chad Shannon who were each 3-for-5 while Anderson, Robbie Rea and Drew Woodall each contributed two hits.

The Marlins are back in action tomorrow night as they begin the second half of the season on the road against the Edenton Steamers at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
