Pilots Clinch Playoff Birth With Double Header Sweep Of Rams 1-0 and 3-1

Newark- It was a rainy day to start at Colburn Park as the Newark Pilots took on the Watertown Rams in a double header match up. The Pilots took both games on the night by 1-0 and 3-1 scores and doing so assured themselves a spot in the PGCBL playoffs.
Game one saw a pitchers duel between Sean Rackoski (Kansas) of Watertown and BJ Nobles (Western Carolina) for Newark. The only run of the contest came by the unearned variety in the third inning. Dorian Hairston (Kentucky) led off the bottom of the home half with a clean single through the left side. Hairston advance on a two base throwing error by Nick Moore (Missouri) and then scored on another throwing error, this time by Drew Hercik (East Stroudsburg) at third and the Pilots led 1-0.
The score remained stayed that way till the 7th when the Rams threatened. Watertown put runners on the corner with only one down, when Newarks coach Mike Armstrong went to his bullpen to bring on his closer Travis Laitar (Cortland) in relief of Nobles. On the first pitch by Laitar to pinch hitter Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M- Corpus Christi) it was grounded into a 4-6-3 game ending double play.
Game two was the same recipe as the first one as the two starting pitchers worked fasted and cruised through the order. But again, it was the defensive miscues for Watertown that hurt them early. Tim Lewis (Maryland) knocked a single to left field with one out in the second inning and later came around to score on two more errors by Hercik at third base.
Lewis added some insurance runs in the 6th with a two run single that chased home Tommy Wagner (Cornell) and Austin Clock (Cortland). The 3-0 lead was more than enough for Newark starter Braxton Wilks (Kansas St.) who went the distance giving up only one run on four hits, struck eight and retired ten out of the last twelve Rams he faced to picked up his second win of the season.
Watertown has dropped three in a row to Newark as they fall 21-19. The Pilots advance to 24-17 and will have the day off tomorrow night before another double header Friday in Utica.
