Philadelphia Soul head coach Bret Munsey signs contract extension

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul announced today that head coach Bret Munsey has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2008 season. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Munsey, who was first hired by the Soul on July 27, 2005, has guided the Soul to their best record in franchise history. Under Munsey's direction, the Soul have displayed one of the top defenses in the AFL. The Soul rank second in the AFL with 21 interceptions and 21 sacks while holding opponents to only 47.0 points per game. With a 7-7 record and two games remaining in the regular season, the Soul are still in the hunt for the Drive To ArenaBowl XX Las Vegas playoff race.

"In a short period of time, Bret has shown qualities that he can be an outstanding coach in the Arena Football League," Soul President Ron Jaworski said. "He is tremendously organized, highly motivated and well respected around this League."

Munsey, who is the third coach in Soul history, had coaching stints as the assistant head coach, director of player personnel and defensive coordinator under Orlando Predators' coach Jay Gruden (2004-06). Prior to his three years with the Predators, Munsey served as defensive coordinator of the Carolina Cobras. Munsey also served as head coach and director of football operations for the Tennessee Valley Vipers of the arenafootball2 League where he was named "af2 Coach of the Year."

"I appreciate the ownership group for believing in me and my staff," Coach Munsey said. "The passion the owners, staff and most importantly the fans have for this organization is second to none. We have a chance to do something special here in Philadelphia."

Prior to his coaching career, Munsey played for the Orlando Predators in 1991. He played collegiate football at Concord College in West Virginia, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1990. As a wide receiver, he led his team in receiving in three of his four years and was named an All-Conference selection.

Munsey and the Soul return home for their last regular season home game of the season this Saturday, May 6 when they host the Dallas Desperados at the Wachovia Spectrum.
