Harrell setting records, making history
May 4, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - Earlier this season, EDDIE BROWN was named the Greatest Player in AFL History by the League's Historical Committee. Colorado Crush OS DAMIAN HARRELL has a chance this season to break two of Brown's records. Harrell needs one touchdown to eclipse the AFL's total touchdown record of 51 set by Brown in 1996 and equaled the following season by Orlando Predators WR/DB BARRY WAGNER, who was named the second greatest player in AFL history.
Harrell also has caught at least one touchdown in 63 consecutive games. Brown currently holds the AFL record for most consecutives games with a touchdown with 65.
Harrell currently leads the AFL with 138 receptions, 1,730 receiving yards, and 51 receiving touchdowns. If he finishes the season leading all three categories, he will become the fourth player to win the "Receiving Triple Crown" joining Brown, CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER, and KEVIN SWAYNE.
TRIPLE CROWN SEASONS
YEAR NAME REC. YARDS TDS
2006 Damian Harrell 138* 1,730* 51*
2001 Kevin Swayne 131 1,890 43
1999 Eddie Brown 138 1,858 45
1998 Calvin Schexnayder 136 1,982 44
1997 Eddie Brown 135 1,650 35
*Through Week 14 of 2006
Harrell is on pace for 157 receptions and 1,977 receiving yards. His 157 receptions would break the AFL single-season record set by Las Vegas Gladiators OS MARCUS NASH in 2004 (154). His yardage total would be the second highest in history behind Schexnayder's total of 1,982 set in 1998 with Arizona. Harrell's projected numbers would not only earn him the Triple Crown, but also would set individual records in each category. He needs to average 135 receiving yards over his last two games to become the first AFL player to record 2,000 receiving yards in a season.
Harrell currently leads the AFL in scoring (306 points), receptions (138), and receiving yards (1,730). He needs five points to break the all-time single-season record set by Wagner in 1997 (310 points). He also became just the sixth player in AFL history to reach the 10,000 receiving yard mark in Week 14 in a 75-54 win against the Orlando Predators. He currently has 10,137 yards.
