SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants' season came to an end on Friday night in a 4-0 loss to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains, who won the 2010 American Association Championship. The Captains swept the Pheasants three games to none in the best-of-five series.
Pitching ruled again, as the Pheasants were limited to just three runs in the entire series. They were shutout for the first time in the postseason and just the second time all year. The Pheasants could only manage five hits in their final game.
Brian Peterson broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a leadoff solo home run, his first in the postseason. Palmer Karr Jr.'s sacrifice fly later in the inning gave the Captains a 2-0 lead. Andres Rodriguez added a two-run single in the eighth inning to extend the gap to 4-0.
Richard Salazar (2-0) led the combined shutout for the Captains with four hits scattered over seven innings. Hector Carrasco threw the final two innings, yielding only an infield single to Reggie Abercrombie.
Ryan Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss. He gave up all four Captains runs and allowed six hits. Brandon Rapoza and Aaron Cotter combined for 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief. The Sioux Falls bullpen finished the postseason with 16 innings pitched and only one run allowed.
Tim Hutting and Kevin Carby each had two hits for the Pheasants.
The Pheasants ended the best season in franchise history in which they broke numerous league and team records. Their 63 regular-season victories were the most in team history, and the club reached the championship series for just the second time in its 18-year history.
Sioux Falls is now 10-7 all-time in postseason play.
