Phase Two of USHL Draft Now Complete

Waterloo, Iowa- The United States Hockey League Draft concluded on Tuesday with the Waterloo Black Hawks selecting 18 prospects from around the world.

The 2016 Hawks draft class included four Canadians, one Swede, and a forward from Japan (who spent last winter playing in Czech Republic). By position, the group included ten forward, five defensemen, and three goaltenders. Three players currently attend Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, Minnesota.

Waterloo's first selection was forward Jordan Kawaguchi. The 2015/16 captain of the Chilliwack Chiefs tied for the British Columbia Hockey League playoff scoring lead with 24 points in 20 games. During the regular season, Kawaguchi turned in 83 points during 56 appearances.

The Hawks also selected ten players born in 2000 on Monday evening during Phase One of the draft. In Phase Two, generally older players were chosen from any birth year between 1996 and 2000. While Phase One selections may not appear immediately in the USHL during the season after they are chosen, Phase Two picks are often skaters who will compete for roster spots immediately.
