Record Week
The Adirondack Phantoms established various records in each of their three games last weekend in a rather interesting an unpredictable sequence of games.
It all started with a massive number of attempts on goal in a Valentine's Day Shot-Fest. 55 shots is the most in Adirondack Phantoms history and 100 combined shots broke the Phantoms franchise record of 98 that happened in 1998 in a game between the Philadelphia Phantoms and Hamilton Bulldogs. Mark Visentin of Portland thwarted the Phantoms attack with 53 saves, the most in the AHL in over four years.
The next night at Albany, it was a shot-record of a different sort. 16 shots in the game against the Devils is tied for the fewest ever for the Adirondack Phantoms.
Then Sunday it was the fireworks from a huge brawl at the Portland Pirates. 194 penalty minutes is the most in the AHL in over 10 years as was the combined 329 penalty minute total.
Five players have been suspended for the Phantoms beginning with this Friday's game: Kris Newbury (4 games), Cal Heeter (3 games), Zack FitzGerald (2 games), Tye McGinn (1 game), Ben Holmstrom (1 game).

Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week
Mark Alt is our Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week. The big defenseman has two goals and 11 assists so far this season including one helper last weekend. The son of a former Pro Bowl football lineman in the NFL, Mark excelled at both hockey and football in high school but elected to stick with hockey exclusively at the University of Minnesota. Last season on April 15, Mark in one of his first ever pro games was called upon to end the second-longest shootout in AHL history when he scored in the 15th round against the Binghamton Senators. That's our Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week: Mark Alt.
Last Week
Friday, February 14 - Portland Pirates 3 - Adirondack Phantoms 2 (SO)
Both teams were in love with their shooting prowess in this Valentine's Day Shot-Fest at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Adirondack racked up 55 shots in the game including 21 in the third period. Jason Akeson finally broke through with 3:39 remaining off a Kris Newbury faceoff-win to even the score at 2-2 which ultimately earned the Phantoms a standings point in the shootout loss. Ben Holmstrom had scored his 10th of the year earlier in the game deflecting a Newbury shot. The Adirondack Phantoms broke the team-record for shots on goal which used to be 53 but they fell shy of the Phantoms franchise record of 60 shots in a game established in 1999 by the Philadelphia Phantoms. The 100 combined shots broke the old franchise record of 98 combined shots that took place in a game in 1998. Yann Danis was stellar for Adirondack with 42 saves but Mark Visentin's 53 stops earned him the shootout victory.
Saturday, February 15: Albany Devils 4 - Adirondack Phantoms 1
From 55 shots in a game to 16 shots just one day later. Maybe Adirondack had used them all up in their Friday game?! Adirondack's 16-shot total was equal to their all-time low as a team. Chris VandeVelde struck early for the Phantoms on a nice give-and-go with Kyle Flanagan. VandeVelde's first goal since December 6th (partly due to his call-up to Philadelphia for five weeks) gave Adirondack the 1-0 lead just a couple minutes into the game. Yann Danis allowed one goal in the first period to Tim Sestito but made several dazzling stops after that to keep the Phantoms in the game. But Albany scored them back-to-back a couple minutes apart in the second period and then added an empty-netter at the end.
Albany tied the season series against Adirondack at 5-5 with the win and also tied the all-time series between the two teams at 22-22 heading into Game #45 in the rivalry this Friday night.
It was the last game at Times Union Center for the Adirondack Phantoms who finished with a 3-3-0 record in the home of their Northway Rivals this year.
Sunday, February 16: Portland Pirates 2 - Adirondack Phantoms 0
The game drew attention in the national media for the wild brawl at the end of the contest. But before the punches and penalty-minutes were flying, the Phantoms and Pirates were engaged in a hard-fought and competitive game at Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. A 0-0 deadlock after 40 minutes was anything but unexciting. Both teams had terrific chances but Cal Heeter for Adirondack and Louis Domingue for Portland were in a tremendous goaltenders' battle with one great save after another. Portland would score a couple power-play goals in the third period and then the two goalies would engage in a different battle in one of the several fights that broke out in the remaining seconds of the contest.
Although the box score did not show it, the game was a much better performance than the night before for the Phantoms.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
