Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators took a record 28 shots in the third period, but were unable to find the net as the Philadelphia Phantoms held on the defeat the B-Sens 3-2 on Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Philadelphia took advantage of its first power play, as Shawn Collymore was called for hooking at 2:57 of the opening period. Eric Meloche went top shelf with his wrist shot past netminder Kelly Guard.
The Senators responded two minutes later with their own power-play tally, as Josh Hennessy buried his 14th marker of the season past Scott Munroe. Hennessy took the centering feed from Andrew Ebbett just the red line. Hennessy smashed a one-timer to knot the game a 1 apiece.
Leading scorer Jeff Heerema gave the Senators a 2-1 lead at 14:04 of the first period. Winger Cory Pecker circled around the back of the Phantoms cage and found a wide open Heerema slashing in. Heerema tapped the puck into the bottom right corner of the net.
Phantom winger Niko Dimitrakos took over for the Phantoms. Boyd Kane handled the puck late in the second stanza, as the Phantoms had a man advantage. Kane found Dimitrakos with a cross-crease pass, and Dimitrakos snapped it into the wide-open backdoor to tie the game at 2 apiece.
Dimitrakos netted his second marker, the game-winner, just a half minute into the third period. As he was skating into the Binghamton zone against the far boards, he snapped a wrist shot which bounced off of Guard's chest protector and hit the ice, slowly creeping over the goal line.
The Senators had three power play chances in the third period, while tallying a franchise-record 28 shots, but were not able to sneak the puck past Scott Munroe.
