Youngstown Phantoms News Release
The 2010 Youngstown Phantoms Selection Camp kicks off Thursday June 10th through Wednesday June 16th, 2010 at the Ice Zone in Boardman, Ohio. The week- long camp will be divided into three separate portions. The Selection Camp will be open to the public for fans and media to enjoy. Schedules and rosters will be available also.
Thursday and Friday will feature the Goaltender Camp which is organized by the Phantoms hockey staff and Goalie Coach Shane Clifford with junior and college hockey experienced shooters on hand for camp. Shooters will also feature Phantoms' recent draft selections and veterans from last season. Each goaltender in attendance gets three on-ice sessions over the two days and is evaluated through a variety of drills. This camp gives selected goaltenders a chance to earn a coveted spot in the Phantoms' Final Camp starting Saturday - immediately following the Goaltender Camp. All goaltenders in attendance expecting to play for the Phantoms must go through this portion of the camp. This camp, along with the week long evaluation, allows the Phantoms hockey staff to make the best decisions possible on the most important position in the game. The Phantoms will return one veteran goaltender, Jordan Tibbett, and will be looking for one or two new goaltenders for next season. Tibbett's fellow netminder last season, Matt Mahalak, has moved on to join the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL and will not be back with the Phantoms.
Saturday and Sunday the Phantoms Final Camp takes place with eight teams on hand for three games each. Here, non-veteran players will battle for an undetermined number of spots for the next phase of the Final Camp which takes place immediately following the weekend on Monday. Players from all levels have been invited with a focus on high school aged players for the future. Fans will also get their first glimpse of the Phantoms' recent draft selections including first round pick - 6'2 185 lb. right wing John Fritsche, a Parma, Ohio native who played last year for the Alpena Ice Diggers in the North American Hockey League where he lead his team's forward group in scoring and penalty minutes.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday is the last phase of the Final Camp as we see three teams of the top prospects from the camp and the returning Phantoms veterans battle it out before the rosters get trimmed from three to only two remaining teams of players. Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning will be the final "All-Star" games where the 2010-2011 Phantoms roster will be determined.
The Phantoms and all other USHL clubs must trim down their current 30 man protected lists by July 1st to a 25 man list. The 25 man list may be kept through the end of September into the USHL's Fall Classic, a pre-season showcase in Sioux City, Iowa. Immediately following this event, each team's roster must be cut to 23 active players for the 2010-2011 USHL season.
The 2010-2011 Phantoms team will report for training camp by August 26th. High school players will report earlier due to school schedules.
Stay tuned for 2010-2011 Phantoms roster updates. The 2010-2011 USHL season schedule should be released in July.
