Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PORTLAND, Maine, Dec. 31, 2002) - The Philadelphia Phantoms were shut out by a former teammate tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center as Maxime Ouellet stopped all 34 shots he faced in a 1-0 Portland Pirates victory.
Ouellet, who played for Philadelphia from 2000-02, made 12 saves in the middle period and 11 each in the first and third to improve to 10-5-1 on the year. The 21-year-old, who also blanked the Lowell Lock Monsters on Monday night, notched his third shutout of the year.
Neil Little made 33 saves, including 15 in the first period, for Philadelphia, which was also held scoreless in its last game on Saturday in Hershey. The Phantoms have now been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since March 23 & 24 of last season - both against the Norfolk Admirals.
Portland scored the lone goal of the game 64 seconds into the match. Little stopped the initial shot on the play by Graham Mink, but the rebound kicked out to Trent Whitfield, who slapped it in for his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Former Phantom Colin Forbes also assisted on the goal.
Philadelphia pulled Little with a minute remaining in the game and had a two-man advantage for the final 15 seconds following a slashing call on Chris Ferraro. After winning the face-off, the Phantoms put a quality shot on net, but Ouellet held his ground to preserve the win.
The Phantoms and Pirates were meeting for the first time since the 2000-01 season, when each team won a game at home. Philadelphia still leads the all-time series 5-3-1, but is 1-3-1 when playing in Portland, with the only win coming during the 1998-99 campaign. The Pirates will make their only visit to Philadelphia on Feb. 19.
The Phantoms begin a three-game homestand this Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. They will also host the Syracuse Crunch on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Phantoms Notes: The Phantoms are 0-4 all-time when playing on New Year's Eve ... Philadelphia was shut out for the third time this season ... The team's last 1-0 loss was on Nov. 4, 2001 at Houston in overtime.
