Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- The Youngstown Phantoms ninth win of the season prevented the Dubuque Fighting Saints from winning their ninth straight game. Youngstown earned a 5-3 win at the Mystique Community Ice Center in front of 2,532 fans on Saturday night. The Phantoms scored two goals in the second and third period and got the game-winning goal from J.J. Piccinich to prevent Dubuque from moving just one point behind conference leading Indiana in the standings.
The Phantoms struck first on a shorthanded goal from Josh Melnick at 7:19 to make it 1-0. The Fighting Saints would even the game late in the first period. Robby Darrar collected his 9th goal of the season on a beautiful wrist shot. Darrar collected the puck and fired a shot from the left wing. The puck darted up and over goalie Sean Romeo's shoulder, sending the water bottle flying off the top of the net. Darrar's goal came at 18:00 and was assisted by Seamus Malone and Jacob Benson.
The Fighting Saints would ensure they would hold a lead heading into the first intermission. Dubuque's relentless pressure provided a great chance for Shane Eiserman on the right wing. Romeo denied him with a great save, but Jarrid Privitera picked up the rebound. He spun and fired a pass to Max McHugh on the backdoor, and he tapped the puck past Romeo to give Dubuque a 2-1 lead with only 20 seconds left in the frame.
The momentum did not carry over into the second period for Dubuque. Kyle Connor scored only 37 seconds into the period on a beautiful wrist shot past Dubuque goaltender Ben Johansson to make it 2-2. Conor Lemirande would give Youngstown its first lead of the game on a jam play in front of the goal at 18:13 of the second period. Youngstown's Piccinich put the puck to the front of the goal from the corner and Lemirande shoveled the puck underneath Johansson to make it 3-2 Phantoms.
The Phantoms offensive attack continued into the third period. The eventual game-winner came from Piccinich only 42 seconds into the game's final frame. Trey Bradley, the younger brother of former Fighting Saints Cody Bradley, rushed the puck into the Dubuque zone and behind the goal. He threw the puck in front to Piccinich who one-timed a shot past Johansson to make it 4-2.
Dubuque's Alexx Privitera would score on the powerplay at 7:32 to make it a one-goal game. Dubuque won the faceoff and worked the puck to Darrar at the left point. He dished it across to Privitera who blasted a slapshot past Romeo to make it 4-3 at the 7:32 mark.
However it was a powerplay for Youngstown that doomed Dubuque's comeback hope. A penalty was called on Dubuque's McHugh that resulted in a goal scored by Dubuque being disallowed. Shortly into Youngstown's powerplay, Youngstown's Connor fired a pass across to Kiefer Sherwood who blasted a shot from the right wing that beat Johansson to make it 5-3 at 14:49.
Dubuque outshot Youngstown 30-23 in the loss. Johansson suffered his first defeat since joining the Fighting Saints in December. He is now 5-1-0 on the season. Romeo made 27 saves in the victory to earn his third win of the season.
The Fighting Saints travel to Lincoln on Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. game with Stars. Dubuque's next home game is Saturday night against the USHL leading Waterloo Black Hawks. It's Olympic Night and the game will also be televised live on KCRG 9.2. Tickets are available by calling 563.583.6880 or by visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m.
