Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In a nail-biting contest witnessed by a sold out crowd of 3,585 at Ralston Arena, the Omaha Lancers defeated the Chicago Steel 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. With the win, the Lancers improved to 28-9-4 overall this season and with 60 points, remain alone in second place in the Western Conference and overall USHL standings, three points shy of the first place Waterloo Black Hawks. Saturday's sellout was the Lancers' fourth in a row, ninth of the season and seventh in the team's past eight home games.
The Lancers and Steel traded chances through the early stages of a crisp opening frame, but it took until 18:52 for Omaha to break through on the scoreboard. With time winding down in the period and a delayed penalty upcoming against Chicago, Luca Frigo clapped a one-timer past Steel backstop Chris Nell for a 1-0 Lancer lead, courtesy of a slick setup from Tucker Poolman and Tyler Vesel.
In a middle stanza that bore a striking resemblance to the opening period in terms of pace and composition, it was Chicago that capitalized late, as an Artem Artemov goal at 15:39 zipped past Omaha netminder Hayden Hawkey to level the score at one apiece heading into the game's final frame.
A white-knuckle third period was chock-full of chances, but devoid of scoring and in the resulting overtime session, a perseverant effort from Vesel at 2:23 ended up sailing past Nell's outstretched glove hand to paydirt, as the Nebraska-Omaha recruit's league-leading 29th marker of the season shoved the Lancers into victory lane.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Friday clash with the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 pm at Ralston Arena with all fans in attendance receiving complimentary "Thunder Sticks" courtesy of Subway. Full coverage of Friday's game begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 6:50 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
