YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Aided by two former Youngstown Phantoms, Boston College captured their fifth consecutive Beanpot tournament title on Monday night with a 4-1 victory over Northeastern.
Forwards Austin Cangelosi (a Phantom from 2011-13) and Quinn Smith (2010-11) lifted the trophy along with their Eagles teammates at the TD Garden in downtown Boston.
"It means a great deal to us," said Cangelosi. "We love winning, and the bigger the games are, the more excitement and value that game has. The Beanpot is one of those classic, traditional games that means a lot to the coaching staff here. That correlates to how the players feel about the game. We definitely take it like a national championship game-I believe we threw our helmets and our gloves into the air. It was really exciting. We hoisted the trophy after that, and we got to hold it in front of the crowd. It was a big deal."
The championship game was a thrilling affair: a 1-1 tie into the third period, Boston College broke the tie for good with a goal at the 14:30 mark by Patrick Brown. The Eagles then added an empty netter at 18:44, and an additional insurance goal at 19:10 to seal the title. Cangelosi notched a secondary assist on the game-winning goal, which was tipped by Brown as he was laying on his back.
"The puck went up to the point, and I wanted to get to the front of the net," said Cangelosi on the play. "I was looking for a tip when [Steve] Santini shot the puck. The puck went wide so I went to go get it.the first person I saw open was Isaac MacLeod [at the point], and then from there, him and [Brown] did the rest."
Although Boston College has now won five straight Beanpots, this is the first for Cangelosi, who is playing his first season for the Eagles after recording 123 points in 109 games over two seasons as a Phantom. Smith, a junior, has won three straight titles.
"[The Beanpot] is a special tradition here in Boston," said Cangelosi. "The past four years, they've won it, so this is the fifth in a row. Coming from a senior standpoint, they've won it three times in a row, so if they had won it this time, they would have won the Beanpot throughout their college career, which would have been a big deal for them. Also, it would have been a big deal for the freshmen, in our first year, just being able to hold the trophy and being a part of all the excitement."
Although Cangelosi and Smith were victorious on Monday evening, the Beanpot was loaded with other Phantoms alumni: Boston College defeated Northeastern's Ryan Belonger and Mike Gunn in the final, and Matt O'Connor's Boston University fell to the Eagles in the semifinal.
