USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

February 11, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

All Iowa Opponents

The Black Hawks will stay between the Mississippi and the Missouri this weekend, playing host to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Friday, then hitting the road to visit the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday. This will be the fourth of six meetings against each opponent during the 2013/14 campaign. Adding results from games against two other in-state rivals - the Des Moines Buccaneers and Dubuque Fighting Saints - Waterloo is 8-2-2 against other clubs from the Hawkeye State this winter.

Games In Hand

Prior to last weekend, Waterloo and the Lincoln Stars had played the fewest games among teams in the USHL Western Conference, 37 apiece. By playing three times in three days, the Hawks spent a "game in-hand" they owned on other conference clubs. However, at this point the Black Hawks have still played three fewer games than the Omaha Lancers or Sioux Falls Stampede, and two less than the Tri-City Storm. Waterloo is even with the rest of the West, except for Lincoln. Waterloo will burn another game in-hand in relation to Omaha on Saturday; the Lancers will be idle while the Hawks meet the Sioux City Musketeers.

Three of Ten (or Eleven)

Eleven United States Hockey League players have scored 40 or more points this season, and three of them skate for the Black Hawks. Peter Krieger is tied for seventh on the circuit after picking up a pair of assists last weekend. Teammates Liam Pecararo and Brandon Montour had five and three points respectively during a busy stretch between Friday and Sunday. Now each at 40, they are tied with each other for tenth in the league.

Special Teams Road Show

Effective power plays and solid penalty kills have been important to Black Hawks victories regardless of where the games have been played. However, the averages suggest that Waterloo's special teams units might have a better chance of success in Sioux City Saturday than at home Friday versus Cedar Rapids. During games at Young Arena, the Hawks have scored on 21.3% of power plays while turning away opponents 84.1 % of the time. One the road, both percentages are boosted, the power play to 26.7% and the penalty kill to 85.9%.

Weekly Recap

The Hawks' second three-game, three-day weekend of the season began well, with a 6-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm Friday. Liam Pecararo and Drew Melanson each scored two goals. Saturday, Blake Winiecki potted a chance during the final ten seconds of regulation, earning an overtime point from a game the Dubuque Fighting Saints ultimately claimed 3-2. Patrick Russell's goal late in the third period could not put the Hawks over the hump Sunday; the Sioux Falls Stampede scored even later and topped Waterloo 4-2.
