Peterborough Petes News Release

The Peterborough Petes announced today that Ron Tugnutt will be stepping aside from his role as the Petes goaltending consultant due to an increased role as the Goaltending Consultant for Hockey Canada.

"I really enjoyed my two seasons working with the Peterborough Petes coaching staff, goaltenders and players" says Ron Tugnutt. "With an increased role and travel with Hockey Canada I felt it was best that I step aside as the Petes Goaltending Consultant and allow the team to have a Goaltending Coach at the rink on a regular basis."

"The Peterborough Petes would like to thank Ron Tugnutt for all the work he has put in during the past two years" says Petes General Manager David Reid. "Ron has dedicated many hours to not only working with our goaltenders but also evaluating goaltenders in our system and providing input on future goaltenders. The Peterborough Petes wish Ron the best of luck and continued success with Hockey Canada."

With Ron's departure, the Petes are pleased to announce the hiring of Petes Alumnus Andrew Verner (1989-92) as their Goaltending Coach on a full-time basis.

Andrew joins the Petes following a 17 year professional career spanning the American Hockey League, Canadian National Team, and 14 seasons in Europe. Verner finished his playing career in 2009 with the Newcastle Vipers of the Elite Ice Hockey League in England.

Andrew is a two time OHL All-Star, 2nd round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers (1991), AHL Calder Cup Champion (Cape Breton Oilers 1993), Spengler Cup Gold Medalist (Kolner Haie 1999), Mens World Championship Silver Medalist (Canadian National Team 1996) and Bronze Medalist (Canadian National Team 1995), Austrian League Champion (Klagenfurt AC 2003). He has also worked as the Goaltending Consultant for the Austrian National Team, OHL/OHF U16, and is the current Goaltending Consultant for the Peterborough Minor Petes AAA system.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be involved with the Peterborough Petes" says Andrew Verner. "It has certainly been a goal of mine since the end of my playing career and I will be jumping in with both feet as well as continuing to help local minor hockey goaltenders. I have lived and played all over Europe and the Peterborough Petes brand is extremely well recognized."

"The Peterborough Petes are very excited to welcome Andrew Verner back to the Petes organization, this time as our new Goaltending Coach" say Reid. "Our goaltenders will continue to develop under Andrew's guidance as Andrew brings a wealth of goaltending experience from Junior to Professional to International levels of hockey with him. Andrew will begin with us this weekend at our Orientation Camp presented by Boston Pizza starting Saturday May 5th at the Peterborough Memorial Centre."
