June 28, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland Winterhawks forward Nic Petan and defenseman Derrick Pouliot have been invited to Canada's National Junior Team summer development camp, which will take place August 4-10 in Brossard, Que. and Lake Placid, N.Y.

Canada's National Junior Team will gather in Brossard at the Montreal Canadiens' practice facility for two practices on Aug. 4 and 5 before travelling to Lake Placid, for exhibition games against Finland (Aug. 7), Sweden (Aug. 8) and the United States (Aug. 10).

"This is a great opportunity for Nic and Derrick as they take the first step toward representing Canada at the World Junior Championship," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. "I'm confident Derrick is ready to be a leader at that level, and much like he did this year, Nic will surprise people with his complete game."

Petan and linemate Brendan Leipsic led the WHL with 120 points apiece last season. He went on to add 28 points in 21 playoff games, second in the WHL only to linemate Ty Rattie, to help lead the Winterhawks to the championship. Petan was named to the WHL's First All-Star Team and shared the Winterhawks' Most Valuable Player Award with Leipsic, and is expected to be a high pick in Sunday's National Hockey League Draft.

Pouliot registered 45 points in 44 games for the Winterhawks last season, 13th among WHL defensemen. He went on to add 20 points in 21 playoff games to lead the league's blueliners in postseason scoring. Pouliot was drafted eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in last year's NHL Draft.

Canada's roster, comprised of three goaltenders, 12 defensemen and 20 forwards, was selected by Ryan Jankowski, head scout of the men's Program of Excellence for Hockey Canada, along with Hockey Canada senior director of hockey operations and national teams Scott Salmond and the newly-formed Program of Excellence management group including Sean Burke and Bruce Hamilton.

Jankowski will continue to monitor these players and other potential candidates during the first few months of the 2013-14 season and at the CHL Super Series to determine who will be invited to Canada's National Junior Team selection camp in December. In total, 22 players will be selected to represent Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014 in Malmö, Sweden.
