ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany Devils forward Nathan Perkovich's two-goal night was spoiled by a 3-2 shootout loss to the Syracuse Crunch. As part of "GE Kids-In-Free Night", 6,319 fans made their way to the Times Union Center Saturday for the game.

"We had a slow start with two shots in the first, but sometimes that's how it goes," Perkovich said. "You regroup in the locker room and we came out in the second period and kept the game simple. We chipped the puck in, took the puck to the net and it seemed to work."

After being outshot, 9-2, in the first, the Devils and Perkovich opened the scoring at 6:42 of the second. Perkovich's turnaround attempt finished with a wrist shot into the upper-right corner.

"I have a big body, so I have to protect the puck," Perkovich said. "You take the puck to the net and good things happen when you do that."

The Devils lead lasted 36 seconds as John Kurtz beat goaltender Keith Kinkaid at 7:18. Moments later, the Crunch grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to a goal by Brandon McMillan at 8:48.

The Devils responded with just 3:31 remaining in the period when Perkovich tipped a shot by Brandon Burlon from the right point. Mike Banwell earned the second assist, which was his second of the game.

"The momentum went back and forth," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "I thought the second was okay, you hate to score and give up that goal right away. It kind of takes the wind out of our sails a bit. We did certainly have opportunities and we wish we could have gotten two points."

Syracuse's netminder Marco Cousineau was the difference the rest of the way. He made 17 saves in the third period, two in overtime and two in the shootout.

A bloody Stephane Veilleux nearly extended the shootout in the fifth round, but his slap shot from the right hash mark struck the cross bar.

Next up, The Devils welcome the Adirondack Phantoms to the Times Union Center for a special Monday afternoon game. Puck drop is at 2 p.m. for the Time Warner Cable Cup game.
