Elmira Pioneers News Release
The New York Yankees purchased the contracts of Elmira Pioneers pitchers Julio Perez and Matt Pike.
Both players have been assigned to the Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League and will immediately report to the advanced-A farm club. They are the first Pioneers players to have their contracts purchased by a major-league organization this season.
Perez had served as the Pioneers closer and was a perfect 15-for-15 in save opportunities. He is 2nd in the league with 15 saves and maintained a perfect 0.00 ERA throughout the season allowing just 2 unearned runs after a stretch of 23 shutout innings to begin the season. Perez also made an appearance in the Northern League All-Star Game in Quebec on Tuesday night allowing one hit while striking out 2 batters in a shutout frame. Perez pitched in the Florida State League last year with the Jupiter Hammerheads (Montreal) and made the All-Star team as a set-up man.
Matt Pike, 7-1, 2.01, leads the Pioneers in wins and ERA and had been extremely effective as the team's set-up man.
