Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
A stunning comeback by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday left the BEARS looking for answers after a 3-2 setback Sunday at GIANT Center. The win in regulation for the Penguins tightened an already ultra-competitive East Division race even further with two weeks left in the regular season.
Neither team would score in the first period, with the Penguins firing 13 shots at Frederic Cassivi. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed the luxury of having three power plays in the first 20 minutes, while the BEARS had just one against the Penguin penalty kill. Into the second period, the Penguins dictated much of the tempo but it was the BEARS that found the back of the net. Stephen Werner picked up a loose puck at the side of the Wilkes-Barre net and managed to sneak it by Penguins goaltender Jeff Deslauriers. Werner's third goal of the season gave the BEARS a 1-0 lead, with Dave Steckel earning the primary assist.
Into the third period, a worn out BEARS team took a 2-0 lead when Chris Bourque scored his 24th goal of the season at 13:06. With a 2-0 lead late, the Penguins showed plenty of grit by coming back to get the victory. Robert Nilsson got Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on the board at 15:35 with his 15th goal of the season before Connor James tied the game at 18:01. Just 13 seconds later, James scored his second of the game and 11th of the season to win it for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Notes: The BEARS hit the road for the next two games, playing in Binghamton Wednesday night and Philadelphia Friday night. HERSHEY'S next home game will be Saturday night when the Norfolk Admirals come to call for the final time in 2006-07. The assist for Steckel in the second period extended his point streak to nine straight games. The BEARS head into the final two weeks of the season in first place in the East Division with 104 points, Norfolk is in second place with 103 and the Penguins now have 100 in third place.
