PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence Bruins (41-30-1-3) started with a two-goal lead over the Lowell Devils (36-27-5-6) and held on for a narrow 2-1 victory on Sunday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
These two Atlantic Division neighbors met for the second straight night, and for the second straight night it was Providence jumping out to the lead. T.J. Trevelyan, who scored a pair of goals on Saturday night, opened up the scoring in this game as well. His 26th of the season came at 14:54 on the power play and made it 1-0. The Bruins outshot the Devils 14-9 in the first, as Frank Doyle got the start between the pipes for Lowell.
The physical play picked up during the second, but Providence continued to control the offensive flow, outshooting the Devils 12-5 in the stanza. Meanwhile, eight penalties were called in the second, including fighting majors for David Clarkson of the Devils and Providence career penalty leader Aaron Downey. Doyle saw his share of action in his crease as well, with one of several goalmouth collisions leading to the second goal of the game by Providence. David Krejci notched his 30th of the campaign at 18:13 to make it 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The Devils cut the lead in half early in the third period, as Chris Minard put home his 29th goal of the season. Tomas Harant raced from his own zone to the right wing side in the offensive zone and backhanded a pass to the low slot, where Minard angled it home at 6:15. Lowell pressured until the final buzzer, outshooting the Bruins 11-8 in the third, but never got the equalizer.
They remain in fifth place, two points behind idle Worcester for fourth place. Providence jumps back into third place, and sit three points in front of the Devils. Lowell goes 2-2-0-0 on the week, and have just six games remaining in the regular season.
The Devils travel to Manchester on Friday and return home to host the Bruins again on Saturday, April 7th at 7:05 p.m. Only two home games remain for the regular season for the Devils, who also host the Portland Pirates on April 13th. All Devils games can be heard live on WCAP 980 AM with the Voice of the Devils, Ryan Johnston. Tickets start at just $10; call the Devils office at (978) 458-PUCK for more information or visit www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
