Penn FC Falls to New York in Penultimate Match
October 9, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa - Despite Penn FC taking an early lead (9-15-9), New York Red Bulls II's (12-8-13) strong second half showing proved to be enough to defeat the Blue and White 3-1 at FNB Field Tuesday night.
An aggressive offensive showing from both teams kept the match scoreless until Penn FC capitalized in the 25th minute.
Beating his defender down the left wing, the Honduran midfielder, Walter Ramirez directed a ball right in front of streaking cutter, Miguel Jaime. The midfielder one-timed a grounder from the top of the box to give the Blue and White a 1-0 advantage.
New York wasted no time, exerting high offensive pressure and answering six minutes later. Earning a corner off a deflected ball, the visitors were able to find their stride. Chris Lema lofted a cross into traffic, falling right in between the posts to find Jared Stroud. As the defense converged, Stroud broke free and directed a header into the back of the net for the equalizer.
With Penn FC hungry for the advantage at the start of the second half, Lucky Mkosana and Paulo Junior led the offensive efforts and created multiple scoring opportunities. In the 56th minute, Junior sent a direct cross to Mkosana who found himself open in front of the goal. Attempting to head one into the back of the cage, Mkosana came up short, hitting the crossbar, leaving the match still at 1-1.
The stalemate continued until the 66th minute when New York exploited a deflection off Penn FC goalkeeper Sean Lewis' hands. In the midst of the traffic, Brian White came up with the ball and rocketed one into the back of the net.
In the 88th minute, New York furthered its advantage with a third goal. A cross from Stroud to Jose Aguinaga closed out the match, leaving the final score at 3-1.
Penn FC returns to action for its final match of the 2018 season on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Blue and White will take on Toronto FC II for the third time this season. Kickoff at FNB Field is set for 7 p.m.
Fans will receive a free ticket Saturday night if they attend the match while wearing Penn FC or Harrisburg City Islanders gear. All other fans will be able to purchase a discounted ticket for only $5.
