Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will be teaming up with My Network TV (WQMY TV) and Fox 56 (WOLF TV) to broadcast 13 home contests during the 2007-2008 American Hockey League season, it was announced today by Penguins President Rich Hixon.
The Penguins and My Network TV/Fox 56 will produce a minimum of 13 games, up from 10 in each of the past two seasons. All Penguins home Saturday contests will be shown live on WQMY-TV, with the exception of the Saturday, February 2 game, which is tentatively scheduled to run on Fox 56. Tom Grace handling the play-by-play duties and all games will be simulcast on QFM 92.1.
"We are very excited about this new working partnership with My Network TV," said Hixon. "Not only will there be more games broadcast this season than the last two, but WQMY's reach across the region means more than half a million area residents will be able to view the Penguins from the comfort of their own homes.
"Additionally, the ability to promote the Penguins across three stations (WQMY, WOLF and WSWB) provides us with expanded coverage that we think all area hockey fans have been craving."
The first televised game will take place on Saturday, October 6, when the Penguins play host to the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05pm, and the schedule will wrap up with the Pens' final game of the regular season on April 12 against the Norfolk Admirals. The full schedule of live broadcasts follows.
In addition to the 13 regular season broadcasts, the Penguins and WQMY will produce a half hour season preview show, tentatively scheduled to run beginning on October 2. WQMY will also carry the 2008 AHL All-Star Skills Competition and AHL All-Star Game live from Binghamton, NY on January 27 and 28.
"We're thrilled by this announcement," said Michael Yanuzzi, president of New Age Media, the Wilkes-Barre company that recently purchased WQMY as part of a multi-station purchase this past April. "Our goal as a company is to localize our stations with sports, news and other community oriented projects. This announcement is a major step towards those goals."
"This joint venture between the Penguins and My Network TV WQMY-TV is the perfect collaboration of one of this area's most popular sports franchises and the station which carries more sports than any other broadcaster in the market," said Jon Cadman, general manager of WQMY-TV. "WQMY is carried on every major cable system in Northeast PA except Comcast. It is our hope that Comcast will soon agree to carry our free broadcast signal to their cable subscribers."
