Albany Devils News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Albany Devils' pursuit of three-straight wins was halted with a 3-0 loss at first-place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Wednesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Special teams played a key role as the Devils failed on five power-play attempts, while the Penguins found the back of the net on the power play and with a man down.
Albany, which was coming off back-to-back wins during a pair of games last weekend, played without three key members of its offensive arsenal: Brad Mills (4g-3a/12gm), Tim Sestito (1g-4a/8gm) and Chad Wiseman (1g-1a/3gm). To make matters worse, goaltender Jeff Frazee left after 20 minutes after being rattled by a shot high off his body near the end of the first period. He allowed two goals on eight shots.
Special teams set the tone for the Penguins early. They grabbed a 1-0 lead 1:39 into the contest with a power-play goal by Andrew Hutchinson setup by Dustin Jeffrey and Brett Sterling.
Jeffrey gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 2-0 lead 7:57 in; this time the goal came while the Penguins were shorthanded. The tally marked the first time this season the Devils allowed a shorthanded goal.
Supplying the relief between the pipes for the Devils was four-year pro Dave Caruso, who was recalled to Albany from Trenton (ECHL) on Friday, Nov. 19. Caruso, playing in his first AHL game since Mar. 15, 2009, made 21 saves, including 12 in the second and nine in the third.
Chris Collins finally cracked Caruso, giving the Penguins a 3-0 lead with a rebound goal at 3:14 of the third.
John Curry registered the win in goal with 29 saves for his sixth win and first shutout of the season
The road loss was only the third of the season for Albany, who is now 8-10-0-0 overall and 6-3-0-0 on the road. The Penguins continue their dominance in the Eastern Conference, improving to 15-3-0-0.
The Devils return to the ice after Thanksgiving with a 7:00 p.m. game at Manchester on Friday, Nov. 26. The team returns to the Times Union Center for a 7 p.m. outing against Binghamton on Saturday, Nov. 27.
Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased at the TUC box office or at any Ticketmaster outlet. Fans can also buy tickets via charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000 or by visiting Ticketmaster.com.
Season tickets, partial ticket packages and flex ticket plans are on sale now by calling the Albany Devils at (518) 4-DEVILS.
