Falcons Fall to Monarchs 3-2

The Springfield Falcons lost to the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 on Wednesday night at the MassMutual Center. Richard Clune scored a shorthanded goal with 1:46 remaining in regulation snapping a 2-2 deadlock and leading Manchester to the win.

The Falcons came out strong in the first period and took a 1-0 lead when Nick Tarnasky scored his second goal of the year at 3:08 of the opening frame assisted by Brent Regner. The Falcons recorded the first six shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second period, Manchester quickly tied the score at 1-1 when Justin Azevedo scored his sixth goal of the year, but Springfield regained their lead at 9:13 of the middle session when Regner scored his first goal of the year set up perfectly by Tarnasky and Jay Pandolfo. The line of Tarnasky, Regner and Pandolfo combined for two goals and three assists for five points and a +6 rating.

"That line had some NHL experience with Tarnasky and Pandolfo and overall they did a good job tonight," said Falcons head coach Rob Riley. "Regner has been moved up to forward the last few games and it's nice to see him get one tonight, overall they were good tonight."

With the Falcons holding on to a 2-1 lead late in the second period, Thomas Hickey tied the score at 2-2 when he knocked home a rebound at 17:10 of the middle period.

The Falcons went 0-4 on the power play, while Manchester was 0-6 on the man advantage.
