Penguins Sweep Weekend Against IceCaps with OT Win

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - Ben Street deflection goal at 1:33 of overtime to lift the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 4-3 victory over the St. John's IceCaps on Sunday at Mile One Centre. The weekend sweep of the IceCaps gave the Penguins their 16th road win of the year - the second-highest total in the AHL.
Leading 3-1 with eight minutes left in regulation, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was seemingly in control of the match until back-to-back penalties created a 4-on-4 situation. Ben Maxwell closed the gap to a single goal at 12:46 with a shot through a screen and the pads of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie Scott Munroe.
A minute later on the ensuing man-advantage for the IceCaps, Jason Jaffray took a swing at a bouncing puck in the slot and batted it home to even the score for the first time in the contest.
In the overtime, Street made sure the Penguins would come away with the two points, getting his stick on Joey Mormina's shot from the center point for his 14th goal of the season.
The Penguins were able to strike on an IceCaps power play for the third time in three periods and jump ahead, 1-0, at 14:00 of the first. A turnover at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton blueline sent Bryan Lerg off to the races for the backhand shot over the shoulder of Edward Pasquale and his fourth shorthanded goal of the season.
Paul Thompson helped the Penguins head into locker room for the first intermission up 2-0, collecting the rebound from Robert Bortuzzo's shot and pounding it to the back of the net with 3:16 left in the period.
Spencer Machacek halved the Penguins' lead just 2:18 into the second with a wrist shot that eluded the blocker of Munroe.
Skating on the power play, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went back up by two goals at 12:05 of the period as Geoff Walker was able to tip Street's heavy shot under the pad of Pasquale to push the score to 3-1.
Munroe turned aside 37 shots to go to 8-3-2 on the season. It was his sixth win in his last seven starts.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return home to host the Manchester Monarchs on Friday, January 20 at 7:05 PM. Friday's contest is a Dollar Dog and Draft Night.
