Norfolk Admirals News Release
Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins used three power play goals in the first period to power past the Norfolk Admirals 4-1 on Sunday evening at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (39-21-2-2) took a 3-0 lead in the first period with their trio of man advantage markers. Mark Letestu opened scoring 8:36 into the contest when he found the rebound of a Jeff Taffe shot in the left circle and rifled a wrister over a prone Admirals goaltender Riku Helenius. Letestu struck again just over four minutes later when his wrist shot from the high slot snuck past Helenius through a screen at 12:37. Connor James then sent a pass from behind the goal line to Chris Minard in the low slot for a quick shot over the outstretched glove of Helenius at 17:17.
Dustin Jeffrey gave the home team a 4-0 lead when his breakaway shot from the left faceoff dot went between the glove and left leg of new Norfolk netminder Craig Kowalski at 12:09 of the second period.
The Admirals (26-31-3-5) broke up the shutout bid of Penguins goaltender John Curry with one second remaining in the game. Brandon Bochenski finished off a Zenon Konopka pass for a power play tally at 19:59 of the third period.
Riku Helenius (12 shots, 9 saves) took the loss in one period of play. Craig Kowalski (21 shots, 20 saves) did not receive a decision through 40 minutes. John Curry (26 shots, 25 saves) earned the win.
Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 3-7.
