Iowa Chops News Release
Thanks to a power play goal by Kyle Greentree, the Quad City Flames posted a 3-2 overtime win over the Iowa Chops on Saturday night in Moline, Illinois. The real story of the game was the penalties. While the Flames enjoyed five power plays, including two in overtime, the Chops didn't receive one power play the entire game. It marked the first time all season long the Chops didn't have at least one power play in a game. The OT loss gives the Iowa Chops a point, but Iowa has won just one out of their last 13 games.
The Chops came into this game after losing two straight to the Admirals in Milwaukee, looking for redemption. The first period was rather uneventful for both teams, mainly for the lack of penalties. To keep the game close, Chops goaltender David LeNeveu was sharp, but couldn't stop the opening goal from Carsen Germyn on a 2 on 1.
The second period had a bit more action to offer up, as the Chops' Chad Painchaud netted his first goal for the Chops, a crucial goal that tied the game with assists from Francis Wathier and Brendan Mikkelson. The Chops weren't able to stay out of the box entirely in the second period, though, as Eric Boguniecki went for roughing with Kris Chucko, and Matt Beleskey was given a five-minute fighting major for scrapping with Chucko as well. Chucko is always eager to fight this Chops team, and he showed that in his seven penalty minutes this period alone.
The final stanza started the way the Chops wouldn't normally enjoy, as they faced another penalty kill on John de gray's holding call, just nine seconds after Adrian Veideman's penalty was over. This didn't matter to Ajay Baines, who turned the kill into a shorthanded goal with a wrist shot that sailed just over Leland Irving's shoulder pad and in for their first lead of the night with assists to Petteri Wirtanen and Brian Salcido. The lead was taken away with just over six minutes in the period with a goal by Kris Chucko, who banked a shot from behind the net off of LeNeveu. The Chops continued with the rest of the period playing tic-tac hockey, playing it safe until Brendan Mikkeslon ended up going to the box with a double minor high-sticking penalty with just under two minutes to go in regulation.
With a man down in overtime, the Chops had to deal with three players compared to Quad City's four. Mikkelson's penalty ended, but just nine seconds after the penalty ended, Brian Salcido went to the box for holding. This penalty sealed the Chops' fate, as Kyle Greentree was able to swoop in and notch the game-winner in overtime as the Flames finished the game 1 for 5 on the power play, while the Chops were 0 for 0.
